Grapes from several LOESS terrace sites. Here we present a typical Grüner Veltliner from the loess terraces of Gedersdorf. Loess — named after the Greek god of wind… Aeolus… rock and soil in one. Loess is sediment deposited by wind during the last ice age, particles of quartz and calcite. What is fascinating about loess is how easily it is moved by wind and water — this gave rise to the characteristic hollow ways on the hillside. In its "intact" state, terraces can be cut without retaining walls and wine cellars carved without vaulting. Our loess terraces are a "Natura 2000 dry-grassland conservation area".
